In our recent redesign we’ve added more emphasis on our resources section. There are so many great UX related posts out there, we just have to share them with you. Besides, sometimes one awesome UX Booth post a week isn’t enough! Therefore, I wanted to share with you other UX blogs that you should be reading on a regular basis.

Usability Post

usability-post
Usability Post knows exactly what usability means when they describe their site as: …a blog about design. Design isn’t what something looks like, design is about how it works. This blog run by Dmitry really dives into relevant resources, tips and insights into good design in order to help you make great products.

Boxes and Arrows

boxes-and-arrows
Boxes and Arrows is devoted to the practice, innovation and discussion of design. Graphic design, interaction design, information architecture and the design of business are just a few of the areas covered. Since 2001, it’s been a peer-written journal promoting contributors who aim to provoke thinking, push limits and teach a few things along the way.

UI Trends

ui-trends
UI Trends is intended to be: a dynamic light-weight repository for interesting user interface designs and trends for website and web applications; a place to comment on and discuss user interface designs and trends; and a source of inspiration for designers and developers. It is a great blog that reviews user interface elements and relates them to user experience.

Smashing Magazine

smashing-magazine
Does Smashing Magazine need an introduction? Their tagline is ‘We smash you with information that will make your life easier.’ To put it simply, they have some of the most comprehensive content on the web and cannot be ignored. One category you might consider following for a UX based feed is their UI tag.

UX Exchange

ux-exchange
UX Exchange, while not a blog, is a very powerful, new resource on the block that I had to share. It is a place to ask questions about the user experience disciplines. This including: Information Architecture, Usability, Accessibility and Interaction design. This site allows you to ask a question and get multiple responses from people interested in UX. You can search questions and view hot topics. UX Booth even got a shout out as ‘a famous American blog on UX.’

UX Matters

ux-maters
UX Matters is a blog that works to deliver content about developing effective user experience strategies and designing digital product user experiences that optimally serve people’s needs and satisfy their desires. From a reader survey in 2008, the majority of their readers have 7 to 10 years of experience in the UX field which creates an environment for higher level UX topics. I’d highly recommend keeping up with this one; you’re sure to learn a lot.

User Interface Engineering

uie
User Interface Engineering is a leading research, training and consulting firm specializing in website and product usability. Check out the Brain Sparks section to find their blog. It’s always a privilege to read the thoughts of the well-known, established crowd. Jared Spool is definitely one of those folks.

Johnny Holland

johnnyholland
Johnny Holland is an open collective exploring the interactions of experience design. One of the largest categories on JH is Digital Interaction, and it just so happens that is where most of the UX related content lives.

A List Apart

a-list-apart
A List Apart, while not completely devoted to UX, does showcase some excellent articles you will want to read. You may be interested in checking out the Usability category for relevant articles, but I challenge you to take a peek at articles outside of that category as well. A List Apart magazine explores the design, development and meaning of web content with a special focus on web standards and best practices.

Think Vitamin

think-vitamin
Think Vitamin is Carsonified’s blog about ‘the web.’ I seem to be adding every recent post in his UX section to our resource feed, recently, and have really enjoyed reading his insights. So I thought it was time I’d share the wealth.

Some Awesome Non-Blog Resources

Alright, fine. I’ll break my main focus to give you a couple of other goodies that I’d highly recommend:

  • IxDA: IxDA is the Interaction Design Association, a network dedicated to the professional practice of Interaction Design.
  • User Interface section of AllTop: Here Alltop.com features some of the ‘top’ user interface blogs. Some are even included above. This is a neat place to keep an eye on for updates.
  • Konigi’s Wiki: A wonderful wiki related to the design of user experiences, including but not limited to: information architecture, interaction design, visual design, programming, and front end development.
  • UX Booth Facebook Page: Interact with other UX enthusiasts on facebook and stay up to date about new UXB happenings. Awesome networking opportunity!

And You?

As usual, I’d love to hear what UX blogs you love visiting. Also, let me know what you think of my selection! :)

  2. I think that Smashing Magazine is a Web Design Blog. It has Usability post, but a few.

    Otherwise, great list!

    • Thanks Nacho. I included them solely because their UX based posts are top quality. Actually, Dmitry from UsabilityPost writes for them on occasion and I really enjoy those posts. It’s worth keeping an eye on :).

    • Paragraph 2: “Design isn’t what something looks like, design is about how it works”
Smashing is an authority on coding techniques and modern design standards. They belong here as much as anyone else. Happy you included it Matt!

  3. Thanks, enjoy the list. Added them to the ol feed reader. On that note it could be interesting as people make these lists to include a opml file.

  4. Nice list Matthew. I didn’t know about UI Trends. Keep up the good work!

  5. Karl Gilis October 28, 2009

  15. With this post you got me adding three new feeds to my akregator… uxBooth, UI Trends and UX Matters (everything else as there already).

This is a very nice list.

Adicional note on uxBooth: You don’t anounce your feed on the header. You should, as that’s where Firefox and firefox plugins look for it, as well as some feed readers.

  16. Rachel Mulcrone October 29, 2009

  29. This is a great list, Matthew. Definitely a bunch of must-haves on anyone’s weekly reading agenda. I’d just be careful about differentiating between blogs and publications. UXmatters, Johnny Holland, Boxes and Arrows, A List Apart, etc really aren’t blogs, they’re online magazines or pubs. Their entries are much more articles than they are posts.

Maybe I’m just hypersensitive to the terminology because I have a background in journalism ;)

  30. Thanks… now the time to read this too over all the other gazillion website I try to read!! ;P

  31. The one publication you were really missing from the list is THIS ONE!

  32. Liked the article! thanks for the collections of blog!

  33. Blogging Tips November 15, 2009

    Good article! keep posting

  34. Great posting but what about http://www.guuui.com.
