2010 is just around the corner, and we’re working on our New Year’s resolutions! Here are some ideas for bloggers out there that want to start the new year with a bang!

  1. Lose the bulge

Losing the extra baggage is pretty much a universal favorite in New Year’s resolutions, so maybe you ought to consider it for your site. Dedicate some time this year to dropping some load by optimizing your images and speeding up your website.

As others have reported in the past, long page load time is a huge turn off to users. Make an effort to speed things up!

  2. Clean Out Those Dead Links

Links can be easy to lose track of over the lifetime of a website. While pages might connect beautifully as a website is young and in it’s prime, they tend to get mixed around and updated as time passes (not to mention all those external links you have no control over). If only there were an easy way to keep links from breaking as time passes…

Enter stage right the Free Broken Link Checker, a useful & free tool that will crawl your entire blog in search of dead links. Take a day, find the dead links, and fix them. Your viewers will appreciate it!

  3. Spend More Time with Readers

Feeling out of touch with your readers? This may be a sign that you’re not communicating effectively with them.

A lot of people make it a resolution to spend more time with their family and friends when the new year rolls around. This carries over to running a website too. Spend a little more time in the discussion surrounding your niche…both on your blog, and around the web. You’ll feel better connected to your users, understand their needs and wants a bit more, and be able to cater more effectively.

  4. Keep Better Track of Stats

Chances are you’re already running some sort of statistics software on your blog. The new year is a great time to really start analyzing your users. You can listen to people all day, but statistics will almost always reveal truths that may go unheard.

If you’re running Google Analytics, maybe you should try keeping yourself organized by taking advantage of the new Google Analytics Annotation feature. It might also be time to start running simple A/B split tests when launching new features or comparing different calls to action.

  5. Work on your Words

Writing is the foundation of nearly every blog out there, so getting better with words can really go a long way. Consider picking up a writing exercise book to flex your creative muscle a bit, or if you’re a student take a chance with a writing course in the new semester.

And remember, sometimes saying less is the best way to improve your writing abilities.

  6. Learn Something New

At the very least in the new year, put aside some more time for learning new skills! Treat yourself to a new book on user experience, or start reading more UX related blogs.

  1. I’m gonna start using my Twitter account for more than an excuse for having an awesome Twitter button on my site!

  2. I think it’s useful in my 2010 to study ux and uc.

  3. What a great article to stumble upon since I am launching a blog tomorrow. I think I am now going to go and optimize all of my images. (you can do this in photoshop right by “saving for web & devices” right?)

Also thanks for the tips on keeping up with the stats. I feel like this will be very helpful.

  4. Learn, learn and learn. :-)

  5. My resolution in 2010 is to become more productive and better at writing, especially in the English language ..
    Thank you …
